Typical Pitfalls of the Undergraduate Mind

What Many Undergraduates Appear to Assume

  1. There's no point in doing the reading or otherwise preparing myself beforehand, because I can just learn what I need from going to class. And if I miss class, I can just find out what I missed from someone.
  2. Why bother joining in a discussion with classmates, what can I learn from them? The teacher teaches me, that's how I learn.
  3. I'm too busy to do homework! Besides, I don't learn anything from doing it. It's all boring.
  4. I really don't like to read, it's too hard/boring for me. I'm a visual learner.
  5. I don't see why writers are always using big words I don't understand and complicated sentences that are hard to follow. Why can't the writer just write it simple?
  6. If I don't understand something, either I'm just stupid or it makes no sense. I certainly don't see the point in trying harder!
  7. If I could learn about something by my own efforts, why would I need to be in school?
  8. I'm just here for my degree, so don't ask me to get curious about something or spend any extra energy learning about it on my own.
  9. If I fail an assignment or test, it's probably the teacher's fault, because the teacher didn't teach me what I need to know.
  10. The teacher is always looking for one particular answer, and I get frustrated when for some reason the teacher asks me what I think. Why doesn't the teacher just tell me what to think?
  11. Because I probably don't know the right answer, I will just keep quiet in class.
  12. All written sources of information have roughly equal value, so it really doesn't matter which sources I use in my paper. I'll just use Wikipedia or the first source I find on Google to do my research.
  13. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and all opinions are equally valid, so why should I have to give an argument for mine?
  14. I didn't know anything about what people have said before about an issue, so I just assumed that they hadn't said anything!
  15. I have noticed/done/felt something, so it is safe to say that everyone everywhere at all times has noticed/done/felt the same thing. Therefore, there's probably no need even to mention it, let alone go into a detailed reflection on it.
  16. Why should I try to study this topic? All you need to know is that nobody knows anything for sure. Let's not waste our time trying to learn what can't really be known.
