Smith CCRT 1963Morton Smith. "A Comparison of Early Christian and Early Rabbinic Tradition." The Journal of Biblical Literature 82:2 (1963) 169-76.
This article was written in response to several contemporary scholars of the author, a professor at Columbia University, who felt as though previous comparisons of early Christian and early Rabbinic texts were very similar in the ways by which they came to be written down. The author argues against the idea that since there was great accuracy in the Jewish practice of preserving unwritten Jewish law, that the same principle can be applied to the sources for New Testament texts. He also spends a great deal of time discussing the fact that texts, both Jewish and Christian, probably changed a great deal following the destruction of the Temple in order to meet the needs of the communities in which they were read. The article is extremely technical and the author assumes that his reader has an almost ridiculous amount of knowledge concerning his topic. It is not for the novice reader, but several bits of information can be learned from the article concerning early Christian and early Rabbinic texts.
