Simeon Ben ShetahSimeon ben Shetah was a Jewish Pharisee and teacher in the first century BCE. He lived from 120 to 40 BCE. He was the brother-in-law of King Alexander Jannai, the sixth Hasmonean priest-king to rule Judah. He was also the Nasi, or leader of the Sanhedrin. Simeon was responsible for the founding of several schools in Judea where Jews could receive instruction in the Jewish Law and Scriptures. He is also known for his success in getting rid of many of the Sadducean members of the Sanhedrin during his rule and replacing them with Pharisees (Perelmuter SRJEC 1989:28-39). Contributors |
