Scheindlin SHJP 1998Raymond P. Scheindlin, A Short History of the Jewish People: From Legendary Times to Modern Statehood, (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1998).
This book is a great resource for anyone who lacks knowledge about the history of the Jewish culture and religion. It is written by a professor at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, and it is very clearly written and is very informative. The author covers the gamut of Jewish history from before 1220 BCE through the Holocaust and well into the 20th century. Chapter three of the book is entitled Roman Palestine and Sassandid Babylonia. It covers the years which are of predominant interest to the topic of this Wiki, the years following the destruction of the Jewish Temple by the Romans in 70 CE through the 6th century CE. The author also does a very good job of concisely presenting anti-semitism through the years by many of the cultures and nations that have come into contact with the Jewish people. Within chapter three, there is a great section on anti-semitism by the Greeks and Romans which gives many of that same reasons for anti-semitism as H.I. Bell presented in his article. This book, though broad in scope, is a very valuable resource to anyone who studies Jewish history.
