Paget PEB 1996

James Carleton Paget, "Paul and the Epistle of Barnabas," Novum Testamentum 38:4 (1996) 359-381.
This nearly error free article (ok I jest, the first sentence contains an unfortunate typo! and there are other typos present in the essay as well) explores the methodological and literary-critical question of whether Paul's letters and theology had any discernable influence on the Epistle of Barnabas.
Written by one of today's leading experts on the Barnabas literature, the article also contains interesting discussions of the historical context of Barnabas, and of the question of the relation of Barnabas to Judaism and Jewish-Christianity. It also contains a useful discussion of the history of the influence of Paulinism on early Christian literature and theology.
Altogether a valuable source, one directly concerned in places with our central questions on this website and in our class. I will assign the essay as required reading in future incarnations of this class.
