His writings cover the period of Jewish history from the time of Antiochus in the second century BCE to the fall of Masada?, the last Jewish stronghold, shortly after the destruction of Jerusalem. He was an educated man and the son of a priest. He claims to have become a Pharisee at the age of nineteen. While he was a Jew, he opposed the first Jewish war against Rome which began in 66 CE, althoguh he did eventually join the revolt. He was imprisoned during the war, eventually released in 69 CE, and later became a Roman citizen.
