Bell ASA 1941

H. I. Bell, "Anti-Semitism in Alexandria," The Journal of Roman Studies 31 (1941) 1-18.
This article is one of our assigned readings in REL 331: Prodigal Sisters. We read it right before we delve into the Embassy to Gaius by Philo? of Alexandria. Bell offers a sweeping, popular overview of the causes and effects of anti-Jewish violence and cultural prejudice (aka Anti-semitism) in the Greco-Egyptian city of Alexandria, from the first century to as late as the sixth century C.E.
Along the way he discusses the relevant works of Philo and gives a particularly detailed account of the causes of the outbreak of anti-Jewish violence in Alexandria that took place during the reign of Caligula in about 37 C.E.
