REL 201: Bible as Lit—Required Textbooks

The Required Textbooks

These are the required textbooks for REL 201 (as of Spring 2009).

They are of course available for purchase at the MHC bookstore.

But you may also choose to purchase them online at Amazon.com. For your convenience, I have included links to the books at Amazon from this web-page.

Stephen L. Harris, Understanding the Bible

Stephen L. Harris' Understanding the Bible, now in its 7th edition, is one of the most popular textbooks used in introductory courses in Biblical Studies. It provides a reliable and balanced overview of the results of mainstream academic biblical studies. Although students who are used to a devotional or religious approach to the Bible may be surprised by what they find in this book, it nevertheless represents one of the most accessible, useful, and fair treatments of a vast subject.

HarperCollins Study bible NRSV

For the past 16 years, the HarperCollins Study Bible NRSV has set the standard for academic and critical study Bibles. Now available in a "fully revised and updated edition," students will continue to benefit from its charts, tables, topical essays, introductions, and critical annotations, produced by the leading scholars of the Society of Biblical Literature.

Brisco, Holman Bible Atlas

Thomas Brisco's Holman Bible Atlas is an accessible, colorful and helpful atlas, with maps and tables organized by the chronological and canonical divisions of biblical history. Students will find Brisco's writing accessible, although critical scholars should be aware that Brisco's assumptions about the Bible often accord more with traditional Christian doctrine or the mere literal sense of scripture, rather than with academic critical study of the Bible.
